The very essence of Aromatherapy is its essential oils. Extracted from a number of aromatic plants, these oils are highly volatile, as well as concentrated. Being highly volatile, these essential oils evaporate fast, leaving no residue, or oily feel, behind. Parts of the aromatic plants, such as flowers, leaves, and stems, in addition to their barks, fruits, and also their roots are used to extract the essential oils. Though the oils are extracted from the aromatic plants by various methods, the most popular and common process is by distillation.

The Process Of Distillation

There are a number of distillation processes through which essential oils are extracted from aromatic plants. The Steam distillation and the Water distillation are two of the methods among many others. Of these two, the Steam process is more popular. Many are of the view that this is the only way to extract essential oils for aromatherapy.

The Steam distillation process requires close monitoring to ensure that the steam is maintained at a temperature that will not cause the plants to be damaged. For the purpose, a still is used which has a vessel for heating, and another one for cooling. After placing the aromatic plant in the heating vessel of the still, steam is introduced into it. The steam helps release the aromatic molecules and oils of the plant. These aromatic molecules, along with the steam, rise into the cooling device, which is cooled by cold water.

The aromatic vapors condense into liquid on cooling. This mixture of oil and water (oil from condensed aromatic vapors, and water from condensed steam) is collected in another vessel. As is the nature of oil and water they are automatically separated – oil at the top and water at the bottom. The oil from the top is simply siphoned off. This oil is highly concentrated, and is used in aromatherapy in this form.

For the water distillation process too, a still is used. In this instance, the aromatic plant is placed in it and sunken in water. The water is boiled, which helps release the aromatic molecules and oils of the plant – as in the case of stream distillation. The aromatic vapors are cooled and then easily separated from water. This method of extraction of the aromatic oils is appropriate for plants that cannot withstand high temperatures and pressures.

One method of distillation is the combination of steam and water. In this process, the aromatic plant is placed in a still and submerged under water. Steam is then introduced to help release the aromatic molecules and oils of the plant. On cooling, the essential oils are collected as explained above.

The aromatic oils extracted by the above methods produce essential oils in their concentrated forms. In case of topical aromatherapy, these oils are never applied to the skin in their concentrated forms. They are diluted with the help of carriers, such as alcohol, lotions, vinegar, or water.

It is essential that the essential oils be stored with care. Properly airtight dark bottles, need be used, and should be away from exposure to high heat and temperatures.

I live in Colorado where we are having a very dry season-lots of warm days and dust and pollen floating around to make hay fever sufferers run for the decongestants and allergy medicines. STOP! Enough with the drugs that have harmful effects on the body! Nature can actually help. Yes, nature has given us the pollen that is causing the problem but nature also provides the cure in the form of essential oils.

Hay fever is an allergic reaction triggered by airborne allergens like pollen, animal hair, feathers, dust mites, etc that cause the body to release extra histamines. It’s the histamines that cause inflammation of the nasal passages and sinus-related areas. Sneezing is generally a first sign and I don’t just mean an occasional sneeze-but sneezing fits. A more serious form of respiratory allergy is asthma.

What Can Essential Oils Do to Help?

German chamomile (Matricaria recutita) is probably the best single oil remedy. It is actually in the daisy family and is high is oxides. This chamomile is a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, relaxant and anesthetic. For nasal allergies, you might want to diffuse this oil or take it internally in capsules. I wouldn’t advise making this into a tea-the German variety has a harsher taste than the Roman variety which is sweeter and more palatable. Besides, one drop will make about 30 cups of chamomile tea.

The Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) is a good second choice. This variety is much lighter in color-pale bluish yellow as compared to the German chamomile’s dark bluish black color. The Roman Chamomile is known for its relaxing qualities, is antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory and detoxifies the blood and liver. This one is so mild that you could put a few drops on your wrists or under your nose, diffuse it or take it as a dietary supplement. Unlike the German variety, the Roman chamomile is high in esters.

Here are two more suggestions for essential oils. Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) is known far and wide for its anti-allergic properties, that is unless you are sensitive to lavender. Lavender is good for respiratory infections, as well as being helpful for allergies. It is antiseptic, antifungal, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and is vasodilating and a great relaxant.

My other suggestion is wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens). Wintergreen has antispasmodic properties, is highly anti-inflammatory, a vasodilator, has analgesic and anesthetic properties. Its primary ingredient is Methy Salicylate which makes it excellent for pain relief.

A synergy blend of essential oils is often more effective for helping to promote symptomatic relief and healing than any single essential oil. The best pure essential oils to use in a synergy blend for allergy relief, along with a brief explanation for why each oil is so effective, include: Blue Tansy, Spikenard, Rosemary and Lemongrass.

METHODS OF APPLICATION FOR BEST RESULTS:

METHOD 1: Dispense 15 drops of your allergy relief synergy blend into a 1 ounce bottle of carrier oil, shake your allergy relief dilution well and allow to synergize for 24 hours, or longer as time permits.

Dispense 1-3 drops of your allergy relief dilution, inhale and apply to tender points of your sinus, chest, upper back and abdominal areas. The oils will enter through the neurovascular gateways located in these areas to effectively trigger your relaxation response for allergy relief.

A Note About Carrier Oils: I highly recommend pure light coconut oil as the ideal carrier oil. Coconut oil is fully metabolized by the body and, unlike most oils, not absorbed into the fatty cells and tissues of the body, making it an ideal carrier for essential oils to move through the fat cells beneath the dermis and into the blood vessels serving muscles, etc. As well Light Coconut oil remains liquid at room temperature and, because of its light consistency, will not clog skin pores, making it suitable to use on sensitive or problem skin.

METHOD 2: Steam Inhalation ~ Add 4-8 drops of your allergy relief synergy blend to a large bowl of steaming hot water, put a towel over your head to capture the steam. Close your eyes and inhale until water cools or until you stop smelling the oil. Repeat, if necessary, every 4-5 hours. Relieves inflammation and sinus congestion and helps you to breath easier.

METHOD 3: Humidifier (cool mist) ~ Add from 6-8 drops of your synergy blend to the water of your humidifier. Add the essential oils 2-3 times during the day, if running continuously. WARNING Essential Oils can damage humidifier plastic and rubber parts.

Young Living makes a blend called R.C. which works amazingly well for asthma. I’ve seen it stop an asthma attack in its tracks, and it is powerful in opening tightened airways and reducing wheezing. When used in conjunction with another blend, Raven, it works to give long-lasting relief.

My husband suffers with asthma, and the combination of Young Living essential oils, high vitamin cod liver oil, fairly high doses of vitamin C during allergy season, and plenty of raw milk which studies have shown has a protective affect against asthma, have worked to keep him off his inhaler for two years now. The high vitamin cod liver oil contains vitamins A and D, which supports lung tissue and the immune system and vitamin C is helpful during any kind of allergy response.

My children occasionally get bronchial congestion from colds, and R.C. works amazingly well to help them breathe at night and stop excessive coughing. They also have never had to go on antibiotics for a secondary infection, so I believe that the essential oils help to bolster immunity so that your body helps to fight off disease more effectively. I sometimes put R.C. or simply peppermint in a cold mist diffuser in their rooms when they have colds, and this helps to relieve congestion and help their sleep. Cold mist diffusers disperse tiny particles of essential oils in the air so that they can be inhaled without heating them to high temperatures. In fact, essential oils should never be burned because they contain small amounts of volatile organic compounds which can be toxic when heated.

R.C. works well for ear infections, sinus infections, and I’ve heard many testimonials to its ability to heal pain from bone spurs and bunions. Its fragrance is powerfully bracing, and I’ve seen people be amazed over and over again at how two drops in the palms deeply inhaled can penetrate through congested sinuses and lungs in order to assist in normal breathing.

It’s not in human nature to believe that something so simple can be so effective. What’s so intriguing to me is that it seems that nature has supplied us with the tools necessary for good health if we simply take the time to explore them. It’s a bit of a shift to use an essential oil instead of cough syrup, for example, but once you make that shift, it becomes second nature, and it’s hard to imagine using anything else.

Hay fever or allergic rhinitis is prevalent this time of year. It can be triggered by airborne allergens like pollen, animal hair, feathers and even dust mites found in our homes and places of work. We get red-itchy eyes, our nose runs, and we sneeze sometimes repeatedly. Essential Oils Helpful for Hay Fever

German chamomile, wintergreen, lavender and Roman chamomile are all excellent in combating allergic rhinitis. Let’s take a look at how they work. German chamomile (Matricaria recutita) is in the daisy family of botanical plants. Chemistry wise, it is high in oxides and is highly anti-inflammatory and considered a relaxant. Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) is 90+% methyl salicylate. It too is highly anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and an analgesic. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is high in esters and alcohols and it too is an analgesic, relaxant, and anti-inflammatory. Finally, let’s look at Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile). Unlike its cousin the German Chamomile, Roman chamomile is sweater and milder. Its chemistry is primarily made up of esters. Not surprising, Roman chamomile is a relaxant, antispasmodic and an anti-inflammatory. So the commonality among these oils is their ability to stop inflammation and to relax spasms and calm pain.

What Is the Best Way to Use These Oils for an Allergy Attack?

Inhalation: You can diffuse the oils or directly inhale them. Since I started having an allergy attack a few minutes ago, i am diffusing German chamomile right now and have only sneezed once since I started the diffuser.

Direct application: You can use them undiluted rubbed on the body or diluted and massaged over a larger area of the body. try putting one of the oils directly under your nose or rubbing it on your upper chest.

Dietary ingestion: You can put in capsules and take internally.

A couple of centuries ago most people simply had to suffer with any ailment, regardless of the severity. Life expectancy was approximately half of what it is today. Due to the increased knowledge of medical professionals, cures and management medicines have helped improve the quality of life. Although the list is quite lengthy, consider some of the following examples and how they can naturally help individuals who suffer from the discomforts of various skin diseases:

§ Benzoin oil – also known as Friar’s Balsam is used for dermatitis and cracked skin. Taken from the resin of the benzoin tree in Southeast Asia, the substance is solvent extracted.

For dry and cracked skin, combine a teaspoon of jojoba oil, 2 drops of sandalwood oil, and 2 drops of benzoin oil. § Manuka oil – according to the Cawthron Institute, the oil lessens reactions to stings and insect bites, while easing the discomfort of itchy and irritated skin. Manuka is used for mild sunburns, oil skin and pimples, fungal infections, chafing and rashes, dandruff, body odor, cuts and scrapes, and athlete’s foot.

§ Camomile oil- comes in both the Roman and German varieties. However, both have properties to aid an assortment of skin ailments. Roman camomile can be used to soothe allergic reactions, dry and itchy skin, dermatitis, eczema, rashes, and wounds. Similarly, German camomile oil helps flaky skin problems like psoriasis, calms allergy symptoms, eczema, dry skin, redness and irritation. In addition, German camomile is touted as a great tissue regenerator.

§ Tea tree oil – the dermatological uses for tea tree oil are numerous. The oil may be used for scrapes and minor cuts. It also soothes the skin after shaving or waxing. Both acne and athlete’s foot can be helped, so its uses for the skin are basically head to toe. Minor burns and chapped lips are soothed. The list goes on for more skin problems and other ailments as well.

§ Mastic oil – comes from the resin of an evergreen shrub or small tree related to the pistachio tree. Its antiseptic properties are used for skin and hair care. The natural remedy is said to help acne, eczema and wounds.

In summary, this list is only a small example of the essential oils that claim to treat the skin for various maladies. The main point is the return of natural treatments as opposed to prescriptions or over-the-counter solutions to dermatological issues. Patients and doctors are recognizing the benefit of a proactive and alternative approach to acne, rashes, allergies, and more. Essential oil for treatment of skin diseases is growing in popularity, instead of synthetic and possibly harsh answer. The term “allergy” can be described as an unfavorable reaction by the body triggered by an allergen, which results in an inflamed immune reaction. While some allergic reactions are extremely mild, some reactions can be quite serious and need medical assistance.

The use of aromatherapy has been on a rise and has actually become quite popular in recent years. The beautiful balance of a musical harmony is created by blending a combination of notes and chords. Perfume is no different. It is also produced by combining a beautiful harmony of notes, which are used to create a chord. A perfume chord is created through the combination of notes or individual essential oils. Unlike music, the notes used to produce perfume are made up of essential oils. The four categories of essential oil notes that combine to form perfume are:

· top (or head) note, which is described as the first recognizable scent that evaporates in short time. These essential oils are typically refreshing and mentally stimulating. Commonly found in this category are bergamot, lemon, lime, orange, fern, dill, thyme, tarragon, fennel, parsley, water cress, chervil, onion, chives and the fruit oils, like peach.

· middle (or heart) note, also referred to as the main note, describes the main or dominant scent. On a paper, scent strip, this scent will retain its character for 8 to 10 hours. These essential oils are typically flowery or spicy scents that may promote emotional balance. Commonly found in this category are geranium, lemongrass, nutmeg, neroli, jasmine, rose, ylang-ylang, oregano, pepper, rosemary, cumin, sage, marjoram and coriander.

· bottom (or base) note, also referred to as the dry-out scent, describes the scent that remains after all other scents have evaporated. On a paper scent strip, this scent may last for several months. These essential oils are typically sweet and earthy scents that may promote inner strength and a sense of grounding. Commonly found in this category are amber, cedar wood, cinnamon, patchouli, sandalwood, fir, pine, juniper and vetiver.

· bridge note, may be added to help the other three notes blend together. Two commonly used bridge notes are lavender and vanilla.

An essential oil is typically categorized as a top, middle or bottom note, depending upon the rate with which an essential oil evaporates. Every essential oil evaporates at a different speed. In a perfume, as different essential oils begin to evaporate, the fragrance of the perfume changes. Because of this, it is important to remember which essential oils fit into each category of note.

Before beginning to create a signature fragrance, a few things must be noted. First, it is important to begin mixing oils in a room that is as odorless, well ventilated and free from drafts. Second, several tools should be collected. The following list will help you get started:

· 1 (one) packet of absorbent, paper, scent strips

· 1 (one) 100 ml mixing beaker

· 1 (one) 100 ml bottle of alcohol (pure grain)

· 1 (one) 10 ml spray bottle

· 1 (one) glass stir rod

· 1 (one) 3 ml glass bottle with cap

· 1 (one) 4 ml glass perfume bottle with glass wand applicator

· Various essential oils

To make a signature fragrance, you must decide which specific essential oils and which notes are preferred. The next step is to determine the concentration of each oil and note. Mix at least 25 drops of essential oils, combining essential oils from the three main note categories (top, middle and bottom). You may want to start with one main scent and use larger amounts of that one particular scent or you may want to combine an even mix of oils from all three notes.

The fragrance levels combined will ultimately determine the type of finished product you will have.

· Perfume is 15 to 30% essential oil and 70 to 85% alcohol and water. Of the 70 to 85% alcohol and water combination, 90 to 95% is alcohol and the remaining 5 to 10% is water.

· Eau de Perfume is 8 to 15% essential oil and 85 to 92% alcohol and water. Of the 85 to 92% alcohol and water combination, 80 to 90% is alcohol and the remaining 10 to 20% is water.

· Eau de Toilette is 4 to 8% essential oil and 92 to 96% alcohol and water. Of the 92 to 96% alcohol and water combination, 80 to 90% is alcohol and the remaining 10 to 20% is water

· Eau de Cologne is 3 to 5% essential oil and 95 to 97% alcohol and water. Of the 95 to 97% alcohol and water combination, 70% is alcohol and the remaining 30% is water.

· Cologne Splash is 1 to 3% essential oil and 97 to 99% alcohol and water. Of the 97 to 99% alcohol and water combination, 80% is alcohol and the remaining 20% is water.

Regarding the alcohol, it is important to use odorless alcohol. The most desired form of alcohol that could be used is ethanol. However, ethanol is often extremely difficult to find and even more difficult to purchase. The second most desired form of alcohol is known as “special denatured” (sd) alcohol. This form of alcohol has certain odorless additives that cannot be consumed. Unfortunately, this form of alcohol may also prove to be very difficult to obtain. In the absence of ethanol and sd alcohol, Retail liquor stores and retail liquor departments provide suitable solutions. For the purpose of perfume making, it is important to use alcohol with the least amount of odor and the highest percentage of alcohol. Three solid options are Everclear (190 proof or 90% pure alcohol), Bacardi 151 (151 proof or 75.5% pure alcohol) and vodka (100 proof or 50% pure alcohol).

To help speed the measuring of essential oil, alcohol and water, the following guidelines may be used:

· 300 drops of water = 1 tbs. or 15 ml

· 100 drops of water = 1 tsp. or 5 ml

· 25 drops of water = 0.25 tsp. or 1.25 ml

· 20 drops of water = 0.20 tsp. or 1 ml

Please keep in mind that these approximate measurements were prepared using water. When measuring thinner essential oils you may find that a 1 ml pipette actually contains 40 drops and when measuring the thicker alcohols and essential oils expect to measure out fewer drops per 1 ml.

Make a signature scent as unique as the individual wearing it and know that it is one of a kind.

A lumbar strain is a stretching injury to the ligaments, tendons, and/or muscles of the low back-it can be very painful and put you flat on your back. The stretching can actually result in microscopic tears of varying degrees in these tissues. Lumbar strain is considered one of the most common causes of low back pain. It can occur due to overuse, improper use, or trauma. A soft-tissue injury such as a lumbar strain is commonly classified as “acute” if it has been present for days to weeks. If the strain lasts longer than three months, it is referred to as “chronic.” Lumbar strain most often occurs in people in their forties, but it can happen at any age. The severity of the injury ranges from mild to severe, depending on the degree of strain and resulting spasm of the muscles of the low back.

Western medicine treats lumbar strains with muscle relaxers, application of heat, massage and eventually reconditioning exercises to strengthen the low back and abdominal muscles. Spinal manipulation may help some. Nature in the form of essential oils can offer pain relief for many.

How Can Essential Oils Help?

A muscle responds to pain with a reflex contraction causing blood flow to the area to be impeded. When there is less oxygen and glucose and a decrease in circulation, removal of toxins and waste products will be slowed. The result is inflammation, muscle soreness and pain. There are many essential oils known to be detoxifying, relaxing, pain relieving, and can decrease swelling in muscle tissue.

Here are some examples of essential oils that may help heal lumbar strains and get you back on your feet:

Palo santo–Has high levels of limonene -up to 65% making this an excellent anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic oil.  Using a combination of Palo Santo & Frankincense for pain & for bone rejuvenation (including Idaho Balsam Fir) will shorten recuperation time.

Lavender-is vasodilating, a relaxant and is anti-inflammatory.

German Chamomile-is anti-inflammatory and a relaxant.

Idaho balsam Fir-is like 98% monoterpenes including limonene and alpha and beta pinenes. It is highly anti-inflammatory.

Basil-is a powerful antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxant.

Cypress-is high in monoterpenes making it a great antispasmodic. It also improves circulation and strengthens blood capillaries.

Marjoram-is soothing to muscles and helps relieve body and joint discomfort. It is used for arthritis and rheumatism, muscle/nerve pain, and headaches.

Peppermint-is anti-inflammatory, and pain-relieving.

Wintergreen-is anti-spasmodic, highly anti-inflammatory, a vasodilator, analgesic/anesthetic. It has been used in countless liniments and ointments for musculoskeletal problems.

Helichrysum-has anesthetic and antispasmodic properties. It has shown effectiveness in regenerating nerves.

An excellent massage oil for lumbar strains is Ortho Ease or Ortho Sport both of which contain fractionated coconut oil, wheatgerm, grape seed, almond and olive oils plus the essential oils of wintergreen, juniper, marjoram, red thyme, vetiver, peppermint Eucalyptus ericifolia (Rosalina) and lemongrass. Ortho Sport is the stronger of the two massage oils.

Essential oils are fundamental ingredients in hair care products. Fenugreek: Fenugreek has long been used for stimulating blood flow especially to minor capillaries such as those that feed the hair root. Fenugreek makes for a great topical application like in shampoos, conditioners and in hair tonics.

Fenugreek for hair care is an excellent choice especially for those that are having problems with hair growth. Fenugreek also compliments sage, clary sage, lemongrass, lemon peel, burdock and ivy extract.

Lavender can be used in any type of hair product as it does a good job of soothing the scalp and the hair. Many people that order baby shampoo with lavender as it helps to calm infants. This calming affect is felt a long time after the calming shampoo or baby wash has been rinsed. Effects: Soothing, Relaxing. Aroma: Middle note. Scent: Sweet, Herbal, Fruity Combines well with: Bergamot, Geranium

Lemon Essential Oil: Lemon Essential oil gives golden highlights. It works well for a treatment for dry scalp, dandruff, lice, and under active sebaceous glands. The sebum on the hair is what keeps it from dry out. Curly hair tends to be more dry and can benefit from lemon essential oils. Be very careful to only use lemon on hair that is too oily as this can seriously dry out the hair after just one washing or rinse.

Myrrh: Myrrh is not typically used in hair care products. If it is then Myrrh is typically used for those have greasy hair and those that want a more purified scalp. It is used in very small quantities.

Peppermint: Peppermint helps to stimulate blood flow to the root of the hair. This helps the hair to receive proper nourishment and to grow correctly. It is a great for hair that is growing slow or hair that is thinning. Peppermint makes the scalp tingle and this is what stimulates the blood flow to the hair. This stimulation can help with hair loss and thinning hair in women and men.

Rose Essential Oil: We love the smell of Rose and love the way that it feels in the hair but the only problem with rose for hair products like shampoo is that it costs a lot of money for rose essential oil.

Rosemary essential oil works great for dry hair and dandruff as well as itchy scalp! Effects: Refreshing, Stimulating. Aroma: Middle note. Scent: Refreshing, Woody, Herbal. Combines well with: Cedarwood, Geranium, Juniper

Sage is one of the best scalp clarifiers that is available from both natural and un-natural sources. It deep cleanses impurities away from the scalp and works well with other herbs to heal scalp problems such as scalp psoriasis and helps when used with zinc to end dandruff symptoms. It is one of the most effective oils to develop a dandruff shampoo.

Clary Sage native to southern Europe, but cultivated worldwide, esp. the Mediterranean region, is a stout biennial or perennial herb up to 1 meter high with large, hairy leaves, green with a hint of purple, and small blue flowers. The oil is obtained by steam distillation from the flowering tops and leaves. Though employed in ancient times and in the Middle Ages for its curative properties, it seems to have fallen into disuse as a medicinal plant, though revived to a certain extent towards the end of the nineteenth century. The English name Clary originates in the Latin specific name sclarea, a word derived from clarus (clear). This name Clary was gradually modified into ‘Clear Eye,’ o­ne of the popular names and generally explained from the fact that the seeds have been employed for clearing the sight, being so mucilaginous that a decoction from them placed in the eye would ‘clear’ it from any small foreign body, the presence of which might have caused irritation.

Historically, clary sage has been highly esteemed and used for digestive disorders, kidney disease, uterine and menstrual complaints, acne, boils, dandruff, hair loss, oily skin, wrinkles, and general nerve tonic. The oil and absolute are used as fragrance components and fixatives in soaps, detergents, cosmetics and perfumes. It has mostly been employed in disordered states of the digestion, and has also proved useful in kidney diseases.

Clary sage blends well with: juniper, lavender, cilantro, pine, carsomon, geranium, sandlewood, jasmine, frankincense, and citrus oils. It is nontoxic, nonirritant and no sensitizing so it does not cause irritation when used in shampoos or skin care products.

Tea Tree Oil: Works daily to get to the heart of dandruff other scalp conditions that can be helped with Tea Tree oil as it works to purify the scalp. It is often included with Jojoba oil for hair as the two are used to deep cleanse the scalp. Tea tree oil works extremely good for those that suffer from scalp psoriasis and scalp dandruff.

Thyme essential oils and herbs for great hair! Thyme is often used is deep cleansing shampoo and works well when used with even the mildest cleansing agents. It works well when combined with other anti oily scalp products such as Thyme and sage. Yling Ylang can be combined with herbs as well for a desired anti dandruff shampoo.

Ylang ylang is a tall tropical tree up to 20m high with large, tender, fragrant flowers, which can be pink, mauve or yellow. The yellow flowers are considered best for the extraction of essential oil. Ylang Ylang is from the first part of the distillation process, and is considered by most to be the best. This essential oil has properties: aphrodisiac, anti-depressant, anti-infectious, antiseborrheic, antiseptic, euphoric, hypotensive, nervine, regulator, sedative (nervous), stimulant (circulatory), tonic. Historically, it has been used for cosmetic and hair care, skin diseases, to prevent fever and fight infections. Is also used to soothe insect bites. Ylang Ylang blends well with lavender, sandalwood, rosewood, jasmine, vetiver, opopanax, bergamot, mimosa, cassie and rose. It is non-toxic, non-irritant and a few cases of sensitization have been reported.

So, there is a good summary and gives you a little bit of helpful “ammunition” next time you might stop to look at the ingredients of your favorite hair care product. All told, hair care is the sum of its ingredients and effectiveness is often a result of a combination of ingredients that help dry hair oily or greasy hair, hair growth and general hair health.

Essential oils are basically the therapeutic grade oils found in plants, trees, roots, bushes, flowers and seeds. With essential oils, it is possible to oxygenate and transport nutrients to the cells of the body. Nutrients cannot be assimilated in the body without any oxygen. This is how oxygenating essential oils are useful in maintaining one’s health.

There are numerous types of essential oils where lavender and tea tree are two of the most famous essential oils having numerous benefits. There are other essential oils having their individual benefits in aromatherapy. All essential oils are basically antiseptic with the tea tree being the strongest natural disinfectant known to man.

Essential oils are also antifungal, antibacterial and they even help in controlling pressure, anxiety, coughs, colds, burns, sites, stomach disorders, problem skin and many other health issues. Essential oils can be used in numerous ways; they can be applied topically to deal with skin, muscular and joint problems or inhaled to cure breathing problems, infections and maintain mental health.

On inhaling essential oils, a chemical process is triggered in the brain that sends hormones and chemicals to the body. These chemicals produce positive thoughts and emotions that surpass any negative emotions and thoughts a person may have. This is why many people find that they benefit from balancing their emotions on inhaling or being massaged by essential oils.

It is usually better to dilute essential oils to render them safe for application to the body as moisturizers. It is also possible to place diluted essential oils in a burner so that it can be diffused in the rooms of your home. It can also be created into disinfectants by adding to water. Add them to humidifiers to combat infections, drip them into the Hoover bag to give a wonderful smell in the house while vacuuming or perhaps popped on your pillow to give you a sweeter slumber.

Aromatherapy uses lots of essential oils to help in the healing of aesthetic, physical and psychological ailments. This is the only therapy that uses the most neglected of the five senses, the sense of smell. With aromatherapy, it is possible to stimulate and invigorate your mind in the morning and then calm and soothe it at the end of the day. Essential oils are used to soothe inflammations, help ease all forms of dull pain, act as an antiseptic and help in stimulating digestion.

Essential oils also indirectly or directly affect the physiological systems of the body. A few drops of peppermint taken orally helps in digestion and inhalation of mucolytic oils tend to help in providing relief from respiratory symptoms. It is also possible to treat minor skin conditions using essential oils because of its antiseptic and soothing effects. Essential oils can also indirectly raise and lower blood pressure wherein it is possible to normalize the secretion of hormones in the body.
There are multiple benefits in essential oils; it is up to you to use your imagination and ideas to create better and more effective benefits of essential oils.

Summer’s here and for most people that means it’s vacation travel season. Whether you’re traveling by car or plane, going on a long trip or a weekend getaway, no matter what time of the year it is, it helps to be prepared for some of the unexpected upsets and minor ailments that can sometimes mar a perfectly good vacation.

The biggest of these is probably the stress that simply comes with travel — delayed, canceled, or missed flights, lost luggage or misplaced documents, a flat tire or other major car trouble, motion sickness, jet lag, and various camping-related mishaps.

Then there are the more common culprits like colds and allergies, upset stomach or digestive stress, headaches, insomnia, fatigue, minor cuts and bruises, blistered feet, rashes or hives, chafing, and sun burn.

There are a number of surprisingly simple ways you can use essential oils, alone or combined with other plant-based ingredients, to address these problems head on and avoid the kind of misery that can make you wish you’d stayed home.

1. Colds, Allergies and Sinus Congestion

With plants, flowers, and grasses in full bloom, pollen is everywhere making summertime synonymous with allergies. Then there’s the congestion that accompanies minor colds you can pick up from air-borne bacteria on planes, trains, and buses, not to mention airports and climate-controlled hotels. To minimize the likelihood of picking up someone else’s cold, wash hands frequently with soap and keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer (preferably one made with essential oils) with you for when you can’t.

To ease congestion, Eucalyptus Radiata essential oil is your best option. It is the gentlest and safest of the various types of Eucalyptus available and can be applied frequently without irritation. For a more powerful decongestant, try our Breathe Ease Diffuser Blend (see our Guide to Diffuser Blends for ingredients and suggested uses). In extreme cases, a trace amount of Peppermint essential oil applied to the back of the roof of your mouth can bring fast and effective relief.

2. Upset Stomach or Digestive Stress

There are several essential oils that can assist with stomach upset and indigestion including Sweet Fennel, Ginger, Lemon, Peppermint, and Tea Tree. For relief from minor nausea and indigestion, place 1 drop of peppermint and 2 drops of sweet fennel in 24 oz of purified water. This also makes a cool, refreshing drink that you can use in place of plain drinking water. For stronger, faster relief of indigestion or nausea, add a drop of peppermint or ginger to a teaspoon of honey and place in a cup of hot water or herbal tea (Chamomile, Ginger, or Licorice Root tea will increase the effectiveness). For fast relief from diarrhea, add one drop of tea tree oil to a cup of chamomile or peppermint tea (or hot water if no tea is available but be prepared for the unpleasant taste). Repeat until discomfort subsides.

3. Headaches and/or Insomnia

Lavender essential oil is a remarkably effective antidote to minor headaches and accompanying muscle tension, and can provide a sense of calm when you have difficulty sleeping in a strange or uncomfortable place. For relief from migraine headaches try our Head Ache Blend, which combines lavender with peppermint (a cooling analgesic), marjoram (a sedative and muscle relaxant), basil, and chamomile, and comes already diluted in Jojoba oil for direct application to the affected areas (temples, forehead, brows and neck muscles). For insomnia, try our Sleep Ease Diffuser Blend, which combines lavender, tangerine, marjoram, spruce, and petitgrain.

With the exceptions of lavender and tea tree, undiluted essential oils should be used with a portable diffuser. If you’re camping or somewhere where you can’t use a diffuser, put a drop or two on a handkerchief or bandanna and wrap around your head or tuck under your pillow and breathe in the vapors. Don’t over-use.

4. Fatigue

Jet lag, stress, long drives, and extended sight seeing excursions (especially on foot) can lead to exhaustion and fatigue. The best way to deal with this is to pace yourself, try not to cram your schedule with more activities than you can realistically handle, eat a good amount of protein (preferably at breakfast), and always stay hydrated. Essential oils that can help are Eucalyptus (mental clarity) and Peppermint (stimulant) or try our Stay Alert Diffuser Blend, which includes both along with Rosemary, Cinnamon Leaf, Orange, and Cedar wood. Use this with a Car Scenter diffuser to help you stay awake during long drives. To relieve tired and achy feet, put a drop in a tepid foot bath, or several drops in a tablespoon of carrier oil for a stimulating foot massage.

5. Minor Cuts, Scrapes and Other Skin Eruptions

Minor wounds (i.e. splinters, hang nails, insect bites, blisters, cuts, scrapes and burns) need to be disinfected and treated immediately or they can lead to painful inflammation and a variety of uncomfortable skin eruptions. This is when Tea Tree oil can become a reliable and trusty friend! It kills bacteria, cleanses wounds, and promotes speedy healing. Like Lavender, it can be applied “neat” (directly) to the skin. Think of it as an invisible liquid band aid. Our Boo Boo Blend, which combines tea tree with lavender, geranium, and chamomile (anti-inflammatory) is an excellent choice as well. For sunburn relief combine 1 teaspoon of Lavender or Boo Boo blend with 4 oz of aloe vera juice and store in a spritzer bottle. Substitute 1 oz of peppermint hydrosol for the aloe juice to enhance the cooling effect. Shake well and spray liberally –as often as needed to reduce pain and speed healing.

To summarize, the four key essential oils you need in your travel kit are: Peppermint (headaches, fatigue, indigestion, and congestion), Eucalyptus (congestion and fatigue), Tea Tree (diarrhea, cuts and wounds, disinfectant), and Lavender (headaches, skin eruptions and burns, stress, muscle tension, insomnia).

A synergy blend of essential oils is often more effective for helping to promote symptomatic relief and healing than any single essential oil. The best pure essential oils to use in a synergy blend for allergy relief, along with a brief explanation for why each oil is so effective, include: Blue Tansy, Spikenard, Rosemary and Lemongrass.

METHODS OF APPLICATION FOR BEST RESULTS:

METHOD 1: Dispense 15 drops of your allergy relief synergy blend into a 1 ounce bottle of carrier oil, shake your allergy relief dilution well and allow to synergize for 24 hours, or longer as time permits.

Dispense 1-3 drops of your allergy relief dilution, inhale and apply to tender points of your sinus, chest, upper back and abdominal areas. The oils will enter through the neurovascular gateways located in these areas to effectively trigger your relaxation response for allergy relief.

A Note About Carrier Oils: I highly recommend pure light coconut oil as the ideal carrier oil. Coconut oil is fully metabolized by the body and, unlike most oils, not absorbed into the fatty cells and tissues of the body, making it an ideal carrier for essential oils to move through the fat cells beneath the dermis and into the blood vessels serving muscles, etc. As well Light Coconut oil remains liquid at room temperature and, because of its light consistency, will not clog skin pores, making it suitable to use on sensitive or problem skin.

METHOD 2: Steam Inhalation ~ Add 4-8 drops of your allergy relief synergy blend to a large bowl of steaming hot water, put a towel over your head to capture the steam. Close your eyes and inhale until water cools or until you stop smelling the oil. Repeat, if necessary, every 4-5 hours. Relieves inflammation and sinus congestion and helps you to breath easier.

METHOD 3: Humidifier (cool mist) ~ Add from 6-8 drops of your synergy blend to the water of your humidifier. Add the essential oils 2-3 times during the day, if running continuously. WARNING Essential Oils can damage humidifier plastic and rubber parts.

PLEASE NOTE: There are many cheap, synthetic copies of aromatic oils, but these are not recommended for therapeutic use. For best results purchase the highest quality oils you can possibly find. Use certified organic essential oils, or oils that have been tested and are pesticide free.
