Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata)is in the custard-apple family of botanical plants and is indigenous to Southeast Asia where most of the world’s oil is produced in the Comoro Islands, Madagascar and RĂ©union. The flower petals are picked early in the morning to maximize oil yield. I was on the island of Trinidad in the Western Caribbean a year ago and was overwhelmed with the fragrance of ylang ylang trees.
There are as many as 5 grades of ylang ylang oil with the first being the superior oil and of course, the most expensive. The Indonesians used to spread the flowers on the marriage bed of newly wedded couples. It has an exotic spicy sweetness to its perfume. Traditionally ylang ylang has been used in skin ointments, hair care, for skin diseases to prevent fever and fight infections. It was also used to soothe insect bites.
How Can Ylang Ylang Essential Oil Benefit our Health Today?
Ylang ylang is antispasmodic, vasodilating, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antiparasitic, and it regulates the heartbeat. It is used for cardiac arrhythmia, cardiac problems, anxiety, hypertension depression, hair loss, and intestinal problems. Its fragrance balances male-female energies, enhances spiritual attunement, combats anger, low self-esteem, and increases focus of thoughts, filters out negative energy and restores confidence and peace. Ylang ylang oil’s calming supportive action on the heart accounts for its primary therapeutic action. For emotional healing, it can be used to encourage self-confidence, warmth, awakening, sensuality, upliftment, calm, joy, and enthusiasm.
Ylang ylang can be diluted one part essential oil with one part mixing oil, can be directly inhaled, diffused or taken as a dietary supplement. It mixes well with rosewood, lemon, palmarosa, eucalyptus citriodora, clove, orange, ginger, sandalwood, jasmine, Roman chamomile, clary sage, patchouli, rose, petitgrain, grapefruit, vetiver, bergamot, and cedarwood. As for safety, ylang ylang essential oil is non-toxic, non-irritating, but it may be sensitizing to some individuals.
